I promised you some insight into the “rebranding” I was talking about a few weeks back. So here it is.
Up to this point, we have been writing three series set in the same world, the Parliament of Twilight books of Monster, Ghost House, and Inertia. That was working really well for us for a while. However, a problem has arisen that we could not have foreseen. Because these three books are set in the same world, there is potentially quite a bit of character and plot line overlap. And, if you’ve read the books, you have seen some characters appearing in several titles. Without giving away too much, there is an end game with the Parliament books that will involve pretty much every major player in the series.
The issue comes in with us writing the books separately. They are all set at slightly different points along the main timeline, creating a disjointed world as we struggle to keep straight where and when things are happening. Nevi and I have looked at the issues and found that the messed up timeline is damaging our ability to tell the story. So, we had to come up with a solution.
What we finally hit on was doing a re-boot of the books where all of the characters are included in a single, cohesive series of books. What this means is that the missing pieces of the story will be written and added to the material we’ve already produced and streamlined into a more dynamic reading experience. The effect will be much more like reading the Game of Thrones novels, where you see many different characters and follow several different plot lines that interact and eventually come together in the end chapters of the series.
Another change that will be happening in the books is that we are backing away from identifying ourselves as “erotica” and especially “gay erotica.” This isn’t because we intend to take out the sex or change the sexuality of any of the characters. We can’t tell the story of the Parliament without including sex. The vast majority of our characters are gay. Those things just can’t change without us compromising ourselves. What is changing is how we handle the marketing and promotion of our books.
We will be categorizing ourselves as fantasy/horror or urban fantasy. Or, at least the Parliament of Twilight books will be, because that’s what they are. Books in these genres contain sex, and sometimes quite graphic scenes. It was these scenes in our own books which were the main reason we put ourselves in the category of erotica. But the problem is that people who are fans of erotica and romance don’t like our books because they aren’t actually part of that genre.
There are no definitive happy endings. Sometimes books we write don’t have a definitive ending, let alone a happy one. Most books in the erotica genre, even those that are part of a trilogy or series, are self contained stories about sex and sexuality. It’s easy to read one, be satisfied with the happy for now or happily ever after ending, and move on to something else. But with the books in the Parliament world, sex is only a small part of what’s going on, romance is never guaranteed, and the stories continue well past the end of a single novel.
After talking about all of that for hours, we finally admitted that we had been distracted by the fact that there were graphic sex scenes in our books. We weren’t acknowledging the rest of the story, the other things the characters were doing. The world itself. So, here we are, looking to change our perspective and put our books where they belong.
What this means is that we won’t be releasing the books we planned for summer & fall. We will instead be putting our heads down and working like crazy to complete book one of the Parliament of Twilight series. Hopefully, we will be able to release it in late fall, since about half of the material is already written and for the most part edited. There will, of course, be some tweaking that has to occur. Nevi is working on new artwork for the covers. We will be pulling down the black and white photoshop covers I made earlier this year. Actually, all the books will most likely be pulled by the end of summer so that we have a clean slate to publish the new series.
And the progress so far, just a week into this, is quite encouraging. We’ve plotted out several books worth of story, some of which will be familiar to those of you who have read the 4 books we have out now. But it will all be in the context of what is happening in the full scope of the world. So far, this is what we have done —
Chapter one – new material – done!
Chapter Two – reworking ch 1, Ghost House #1 – done!
Chapter Three – new – Nevi is writing it
Chapter Four – new – I am plotting it. Right now.
We have several chapters of new material plotted out after this, which will take us about to chapter 10. Give or take.
And I want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported, encouraged, rooted for us. To those of you who have bought our books and shared our links. Everyone who took a few minutes to leave a review. All of you have helped us get to where we are today and without you, we wouldn’t be going forward into this brave new world where our story can spread its wings and mature into the epic adventure it was always meant to be. THANK YOU so very much!!
